At 15, I fight for the chance to breathe and live normally
At the age when I should think about friends, exams, dreams, and what my future will look like, I live with a huge fear: that my own body is betraying me and robbing me of my childhood.
It all started 6 months ago, when a routine check-up showed that what seemed like a simple back problem is, in fact, a serious disease: severe scoliosis. This condition curves my spine more and more, twists it and deforms it in a painful and dangerous way.
I tried to believe that it would be just a difficult but fleeting stage. I wore a corset 23 hours a day. It squeezed me, it hurt me, it made me feel trapped in my own cage. I did long and exhausting therapies, but the hope that these methods would save me was shattered. The doctor told us that one of the curves of my spine is stiff, does not respond to treatments, and the risk of damaging my heart and lungs is increasing day by day.
At 15, I should worry about simple things – homework, exams, maybe the first trip with colleagues. Instead, I live with the fear that every day means an even greater deformity, a heavier breathing, a heartbeat increasingly burdened by the disease. Sometimes I look in the mirror and find it hard to recognize my own body. I'm ashamed to wear the shirt I once wore proudly. I ask myself: "Why me? Why now?"
Dr. Alexandru Thiery told us the truth I heard with a trembling heart: my only chance is a complex operation at Monza Hospital. This intervention can straighten the spine, save the lungs from being pressured, relieve the heart of the burden of curvatures. It is a difficult operation, but with a high chance of success, if we manage to do it on time.
But my chance carries a price that my family cannot cover: 39,100 euros. For my parents – the housewife mother and the father, a driver – this amount is impossible. For me, however, this amount means everything: a normal childhood, a future, a life without pain.
I know I'm just a child, but I learned too early that the disease doesn't ask how old you are and doesn't choose who it loves or not.
