Cosmin's story can be our story!
Three months ago, we were a happy family and we were enjoying the lust for life of our little boy, Cosmin, aged 2 years and 7 months.
I felt like he was growing up, because he'd turned from baby into a very cheerful and brave little boy. He was discovering the first words and we were preparing for a new stage of his childhood, kindergarten.
In early February, I went for a pediatric check-up because for 6 days he had a fever and limp, complaining of pain in his right hip. Suddenly, he didn't want to run, he just asked in his arms. He was listless. In orthopaedics he was consulted, everything was fine. The pediatrician, on the other hand, gave her a flu test, being an epidemic, and a hemogram.
Upon learning of the results, the dance called us into an office, closed the door behind us and invited us to sit down. He said: "The flu test came back negative, but the hemogram has abnormal results. Your child is suspected of leukaemia or a serious infection in the blood." We crashed, we thought it was a joke, that it wasn't true and that the blood test was wrong. He sent us to Fundeni as a matter of urgency for admission. It all happened on February 5th, and on the 7th we started chemotherapy, following the result of the medullary puncture, which confirmed the diagnosis: Acuta Lymphoblastic Leukaemia type L1 and the fact that 55% of the cells were cancerous.
Since then we have been living a nightmare, from which we hope every day to wake up, look at Cosmin and see a healthy baby. But it's not like that. We've been hospitalized for almost three months. The protocol involves intense chemotherapy treatment to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy has very strong side effects and gives it aggression, nausea, sores, cracks, hair loss and more.
Because of the bone pain, Cosmin couldn't move for a long time. Our days have elapsed in a bed where we tried to provide him with all the comfort and make it easier to get over this period. The children in the hospital, sick like him, became his family and, thanks to them, Cosmin slowly began to rediscover walking.
These days I've received good news. First, after all this time. Cosmin has been accepted to a hospital in Rome and we are going to transfer him there for the best chance of life.
We donated and helped every time we saw a case but we were convinced that this couldn't happen to us. It's happened to us and all we want is that years from now we can tell Cosmin about how brave he was and how he went through this terrible disease.
I've been learning lately that people together can work miracles. Friends and family have impressed us with their mobilization, but we have a long way to go before we reach the necessary amount. If you would like to help us heal Cosmin, please donate to the accounts below.
I still find it hard to write the word Leukaemia, I give my tears when I say it but I want to believe that he will get better and become the healthy, lively and loving little boy again.
