My name is Diana Stefanut and I am writing to you with a desperate request. I'm writing to you from a bed where I spend almost all my life.
It all started in adolescence, when the first back pain appeared. Since then, my life has become a continuous struggle. I've tried everything I could – therapies, recoveries, treatments – but, despite my efforts, I've reached a point where I can no longer go on my own.
A few years ago, I was paralyzed from the middle down. One day I was standing, with hopes and plans. The next day, my body failed.
Since then, I've gone through five painful surgeries, I have 20 screws and a prosthesis in my spine, and my life is held up instead of a corset, crutches and a lot of pain.
And yet, I stubbornly fight. I work from home, from bed, in a foreign city where I came to have access to better doctors. I'm alone here. I can't even walk to the corner of the street. I have no one to ask for help except a friend and a few girls from a church group who visit me sometimes.
My family cannot support me: my mother is seriously mentally ill, and my father takes care of her. I miss home, people, simple walks... I miss feeling like a whole person.
I went to Monza Hospital and the doctors here told me that there was a chance! But not without price. To stabilize my spine and regain my mobility, two operations are urgently needed. The total cost is approximately 37,000 euros, to which will be added recovery, check-ups, home care.
It is a huge amount for me, impossible without your support.
But I know that I am not asking for a luxury. I ask for a lifetime. I'm asking for a chance to go again. Getting out of bed. To be able to visit my mother. To look at the sky without bars at the window. To live.
