Emanuel's story

Emanuel, the third of our five children, is affected by a rare disease that has dramatically affected his life for several years. From a small ataxia, the disease evolved to the quasi-total loss of control of the lower limbs. Following lengthy neurological investigations, it was discovered that the problem comes from several extradural arachnoid cystic formations T7-L3, which exert immense pressure on the medullary cord. A few days after the diagnosis, in April 2018, Emanuel underwent surgery in Bucharest.

Following the operation began to recover, but at some point progress ceased. A new MRI investigation showed the restoration of the cyst membranes and, by implication, the recurrence of pressure on the medullary cord. A new intervention was urgently decided on 14 September 2018. Unfortunately, the post-operative development was not what was expected. The degree of control over the lower part of the body remained limited. New imaging investigations have again revealed the restoration of the cyst, major compression on the marrow and the need for new surgery, as quickly as possible, to avoid paralysis.

In these circumstances I understand that a new surgical approach is required. I looked for solutions, I talked to doctors, but everything seemed to lead to a classic approach, with consequences probably similar to those described above. The perspective changed radically when we came to communicate with a Romanian doctor from the spinal surgery center of the famous clinic in Karlsbad. A team of spinal surgery specialists, led by Prof. Dr. TOBIAS PITZEN, assessed Emanuel's situation and concluded that a solution that no one proposed to us in Romania is required: An interdisciplinary intervention, with the participation of two teams, one of orthopaedics and another of neurosurgeons, leading to the definitive removal of cysts and the reconstruction of the spine. Collaboration between the two teams is essential given the unusual size of the cysts.

Unfortunately, once the cyst has recovered, the situation has continuously worsened and we are afraid that the same trend will continue. Understanding this, all doctors consulted consider a new surgery urgent. However, while in Romania we are still offered solutions similar to those described above, the team in Germany understood that the only appropriate formula is that of the total removal of cystic formations. We therefore have two very different visions. Given the history of the disease, it is obvious that a radical approach is required, but the fact that in Romania cysts of this kind are operated does not facilitate obtaining approval of the E 112 certificate. Despite the obvious setbacks, we will not stop doing everything we can to get approval. At the same time, however, since we cannot anticipate the completion of the file or the time needed, we are in a position to do everything in our power to find the necessary funds for the operation in the clinic in Karlsbad. The estimated amount is large, EUR 50,000, but we hope that there are people around us that we need at this difficult time. We ask the Good Lord to reward the love of all donors.
