George's story

George Popeanca brought a lot of joy to his family when he came into the world 12 years ago. The parents were at the height of their happiness, although the little boy had been born prematurely at just 26 weeks and was only 1kg. They got over their fears, especially since the doctors encouraged them, but something wasn't right. Sitting, holding your head straight and talking were over-expected... At a year and a half, George was still not working, which alarmed his parents. Following an X-ray, the little one was diagnosed with spastic paraparesis and recommended physiotherapy. Since then, a long journey has followed through hospitals, investigations, operations and recovery. It was extremely difficult, and for the child and for the mother and father, having to travel 80 km away from home to the recovery center, 10 times a year. As if the situation was not so particularly difficult, both of George's mother's in-laws were paralyzed when he was 6 years old, which meant that the woman had to take care of everyone now, but the lack of money needed for treatment forced her to burden herself even more - she took into care two other elders, and they were paralyzed in bed.

In all this sad story there is also a ray of hope. On one of the days of recovery, George's mother met a little boy with a similar problem to her son three years later, and this time the progress was remarkable. He learned that the child's parents had operated on him in Galati, and since then he has started to walk much better. So George also has the chance to walk on his own, to stop struggling because of the disease, but that means another financial effort for the family, which is already on the edge with all the resources. It takes EUR 1750,an amount that we can easily raise through our donations, as we have done for other children, who are now enjoying a much easier life. And this innocent child can straighten out not only his gait, but also his childhood and adult life with a small gesture, but extremely important to him.
