Florin's story
Florin Paraschiv is a 13-year-old boy who carries on his shoulders a burden that is much too heavy for his young age. The diagnosis of autism, received at just 3 years old, was the beginning of a struggle that quickly turned into a marathon of therapies, treatments and constant care. Florinel is non-verbal, and his family has always hoped that, one day, he will be able to talk and enjoy the childhood he deserves. But, when hope began to bloom, destiny brought a new challenge: epileptic seizures.
The crises appeared suddenly and relentlessly, for no obvious reason. The medical investigations were long and exhausting, but Florinel continued to be tormented by multiple and prolonged crises, unable to express what he felt before or after them. Following several tests and consultations with top specialists, the diagnosis was confirmed: autism, focal epilepsy, Lennox syndrome and epileptic encephalopathy. All of this underscores a struggle that goes beyond a family's usual resources.
Currently, Florinel is undergoing treatment for epilepsy, but his syndrome is drug-resistant. His family sought help abroad and found a ray of hope in doctors in Vienna, who recommended autologous stem cell transplants. So far, Florinel has gone through five such interventions, but the need for additional treatments is vital to give him a real chance at a better life.
Now, doctors in Vienna are proposing a transplant of mesenchymal cells from the donor, an intervention that Florinel has never done before. Its cost is 15,000 euros, an overwhelming amount for his family.
"When I look into Florinel's eyes, I feel that I have to find a way, any way, to help him. I saw his suffering day by day, I saw how each crisis kidnaps him little by little and it hurts me that I can't do more alone. I put all my hopes in the doctors who have been by our side so far and in those moments when I thought that maybe, one day, I would hear his first word. My dream is to see Florinel smiling, without pain, without fear. Every intervention, every moment of support, every step we take with your help, brings us closer to that moment.
