Marinela's story
Marinela, Mari as her friends call her from "Ana and the Children", is a little girl of a limp, is 13 years old, 107 cm and light as a flake - 15 kg. Camouflaged each time by loose clothes, so that the other children do not notice, nothing lets the suffering of Marinela to be seen. And yet... The malformation of the vertebral column contorts Marinela's wiry body...
With a real chance of recovery, we decided to support this case so that Marinela would have a chance at a normal life. A long string of detailed medical tests and investigations followed. The diagnosis came: complex malformation of the thoraco-lumbar spine and toracia box, a scoliosis of 114 degrees. Complex surgery is required to correct the spine, as well as the installation of screws that will be adjusted as the child grows. All this costs 25,000 Euros. Although we didn't have the money yet, we started making phone calls, looking for doctors, understanding all the details. That's how I got to Dr. Alexandru Thiery, from the Recovery Clinic, and I found out that time doesn't flow in Marinela's favor - because of malformation in her spine, her lungs are atrophied. But the bad news was intertwined with the good news - another foundation offered to help us with the costs for those great screws needed for the surgery. It would remain to pay 6000 Euros instead of 25,000 Euros.
Confident that we can start a fundraising campaign for the 6000 euros, we begin all the preparatory investigations for the surgery with the help of the team of doctors at Monza Hospital – the place where a child like Mari could be operated on. In this hospital the surgery assists from abroad a specialist in neuromonitoring , specialist that in Romania we do not have, to intervene in the undesirable situation of a medullary shock, which could leave Mari paralyzed although the surgery on the spine would have succeeded.
However, during the preparatory investigations, a severe malformation of the heart was discovered. Without repairing Marinela's heart, there was no question of surgery on her spine. Her heart will fail during the operation on her spine. Tough shot! The new intervention at the heart of Marinela means another 6000 euros, since even the first 6000 euros are not collected.
Two days later, people from the Monza Hospital team find another foundation in Italy that agreed to pay 4,000 euros out of the 6000 euros for Marinela's heart surgery. And we get some good news: The association can pay in instalments later, as possible.
Marinela is brought to Bucharest. It's the first time for Mari that she's been admitted to a hospital, the first time she's seen syringes, infusions and especially the first time she's had her own crib of her own to sleep in. A multidisciplinary team consisting of cardiovascular surgeon, pediatrician, interventional cardiologist, anesthesiologist and intensive care physician with pediatric experience, pediatric cardiologist, clinician and nurses with pediatric training have joined forces for Marinela's heart to be repaired. During the intervention in the reserve, Marinela's father is silent and wipes away his tears from time to time.
After three hours comes the good news, everything had gone normally, and the diameter of the "communication" between the atria (DSA – atrial septal defect) had been larger than that seen in ultrasounds.
The last day of 2014 comes with great news - one of Marinela's new friends has transferred to the association's account all the remaining 2000 Euros for the payment of the first intervention - the one at the heart.. Thus, the nearly 1000 Euros already collected have been converted in advance for the operation on the column.
Marinela currently has the consent for spinal surgery, but there is no money to purchase the device called "halo", necessary to support the head during surgery. This device costs 6000 euros, money that we hope to raise as soon as possible, since the neuromonitoring specialist comes to Romania in November to perform other interventions and it is the right time to synchronize with this program, so that we do not have to cover additional expenses with travel.
At the moment the sum of 2000 euros has been raised, money needed for pre- and post-operative investigations.
Any amount, how small is very important and thank you for your help."
