€600,000 for one life: Two brothers, a rare disease and a chance in Australia
Today we turn to you to share and ask for support in a deeply emotional and critical case: the story of the Voineas.
Vlad and Madalina Voinea are parents of three extraordinary children, who in the face of adversity have shown amazing resilience. Three years ago, their family was rocked by the news that David, their first son, had been diagnosed with leukemia. Thanks to the treatment he received at the prestigious Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome, David recovered remarkably. This victory, however, was soon overshadowed by another devastating challenge.
Shortly after the birth of their second child, Mario, the Voineas discovered that their joy would be tested again. Mario was diagnosed with hereditary spastic paraparesis type 56, a rare genetic condition that affects nerve cells responsible for voluntary movements. This illness turned Mario's life into a continuous struggle for mobility and independence.
The situation became even worse when Medeea, the youngest member of the family, was diagnosed with the same disease from birth. Thus, the Voineas now faces the challenge of managing the needs of two children with a severe and progressive condition, while trying to maintain a normal life for David, who is still recovering from leukemia.
Today, there is a ray of hope for Mario and Medeea. An innovative gene therapy treatment developed in Australia offers a real possibility of significantly improving their quality of life. This treatment involves giving a single injection that can restore lost motor functions. The cost of treatment, however, is €1.2 Million for both children - an enormous amount for any family.
So far, the Voineas have managed to raise €213,320, but the road to the required amount is still long. Time is a critical factor, as treatment must be applied while children are still young to maximize the effects of therapy.
Madalina Voinea's statement: "Every day, looking at Mario and Medeea, I feel a mixture of pain and hope. I can't describe the desperation to see your own children can't sit, talk, walk, when they should be exploring the world around them. But we will not give up. Therapy in Australia is more than a chance; it is our dream that Mario and Medeea can run and play like any child. Please help us make this dream a reality."
