Caroline's story

Carolina was born on April 27, 2016, with a normal weight of 3800 grams, at 39 weeks and with a favorable post partum evolution. At just three months old, the parents felt something was wrong with their princess and investigated her neurology, cardiology and genetic testing. He started his physiotherapy sessions, and all the tests indicated hyptonia.

At the age of 8 months, Carolina received the result of genetic tests, and the diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Amyotrophy Type 1 (Werdnig-Hoffman) was confirmed. Since then, a cranial struggle has begun to stop the disease, to find answers and solutions. This rare genetic disease is the no.com.au cause. 1 at infant death, most affected children die by the age of 18 months. Motor neurons in the spinal cord deteriorate and the muscles atrophy, affecting all vital functions.

Carolina can't support her head, her muscles are hypotonic, she has swallowing disorders, and coughing is ineffective. Muscle damage leads to skeletal deformities, such as clogging of the sternum, scoliosis and cyphoscoliosis. The intellect is not affected, it is a cheerful, loving child, it speaks "mother", it imitates the sounds of animals and it adores its older brother, Victor.

Although she went through two severe pneumonias, she lost a lot of weight (she's 7 kg at 1 year and 3 months), Carolina struggles to live and teaches us to be strong, not to give up, to think that one day she'll be fine. To support his efforts, Carolina needs the following medical devices:

• surgical vacuum cleaner of portable secretions
• pulsoximeter
• Cough Assisted Cough Cough Device
• vest with vibrations to detach the secretions from the lungs.
• Bipap apparatus for non-invasive breathing
• supplements and hypercaloric food to help her gain weight

In 2016 the first treatment for the disease was approved in the US, called Spinraza. With the help of family, friends, acquaintances, we were able to get Carolina to France, to The Hospitaux Universitaires Paris Armand Trousseau, a hospital that has a license to use this medicine.

He received four injections, and was given an intrathecal injection every four months for the rest of his life. The cost of a consultation, before each injection, is 564 euros, one-day hospitalization costs 1390 euros, but this can be extended depending on the reaction to the medicine of the child. Depending on the date of departure, the parents were able to find tickets between 300-1000 euros, and the accommodation cost 165 euros for a minimum of 3 nights.

Since Spinraza was approved by the Insurance House of France, they were transferred to Belgium for the next injection, on 25.08.2017 being scheduled for consultation, and on 01.09.2017 for intrathecal injection.
Within a year she will have to endure about 30,000 euros to provide Caroline with treatment trips with everything they entail, medical devices, therapy sessions and specialist consultations, medical equipment such as orthotics, wheelchairs, not taking into account unfortunate events such as admissions with pneumonia or other ailments.

With God's help, her progress is slow, giving us hope and confidence that she will be with us to love and cherish her, and her brother will have with her the sister she loves so much. Please help Carolina continue with treatment, to have a chance at childhood, at life.
